Small dogs rarely stop jumping onto the couch. They just land worse. A dachshund or a shih tzu lands on the front legs with the spine still extended, and after enough years the landing is what does the damage, not the climb. Heather is a set of foam dog stairs that is soft the whole way through: high-density foam, no frame, no hard edge to catch a hip on the way past.
The steps are shallow on purpose. A 2.6-inch rise is low enough for short legs and old joints to take one at a time instead of hauling. The treads are wide ochre corduroy, which gives small claws something to hold, and the sides are a green-and-white ticking stripe, so it reads as a footstool rather than equipment parked beside the couch.
The whole cover unzips and goes in the machine. This is the piece of furniture a dog stands on with muddy feet twice a day.

Which height do you need?
Measure the height of the couch cushion or mattress, not the frame. Three steps reaches 15.7 inches, four 19.9, five 21.3. If you are between two sizes, size up: a dog will step down onto a top step that sits slightly proud but will refuse one that is short. Heather is for small and medium dogs up to 60 lb. A Labrador will compress the foam too far, and for a big dog Brook or our wooden stairs are the better choice. At 21.3 inches it will not reach a 25-inch bed without a step at the top.

Is there any assembly, and will it slide on a wood floor?
It is a single foam piece with no frame, so there is nothing to put together. The base is a grippy non-slip fabric and the weight of the foam helps; on polished parquet, set it against the couch so the couch takes the push.
